INVITATION

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is a privilege and a pleasure to announce that the Asia Pacific Regional NGO Symposium, Asia pacific Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-First Century, will be held on Thailand, at Kasetsart University, Kampaengsan Campus, Nakorn Pathom, on August 31 through September 4, 1999. A Youth Forum on the same theme will organized concurrently.

Representatives from 4 subregions of Asia/Pacific met at a planning meeting in Penang, Malaysia, to plan this important event. A steering committee with subregional members is working to prepare a programme based on full participation of all stake holders in building an equitable and peaceful world for Asia Pacific people.

The symposium will provide a forum for leaders from all over Asia-Pacific to join forces in the review and assessment of the implementation of the Beijing Platform For Action discussing persistent and emerging trends and issues, best practices, gaps and obstacles encountered. The participants will prepare a report with recommendations to be presented to the ESCAP High-Level Meeting schduled in October 26-29, 1996. This document will also be used at the 44th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women at the NGO Consultation prior to the Special Session of the General Assembly to be convened by the United Nations in June 2000.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work with your Asia-Pacific sisters and brothers including the younger generation while sharing the challenges of the rich diversity of our region. The Symposium will be opened to all who wish to attend. Your early response will be much appreicated. Once you are in Thailand we will look after you in the Thai tradition-like a member of the family.

We look forward to welcoming you to the symposium.

With warmest regards.
